You wipe the shower door. It looks great — wet. Twenty minutes later the haze is back, and it’s the same haze that was there before you started. You buy a stronger spray. Same result. Somewhere around the third bottle you start to wonder whether the glass itself is just old.
Usually it isn’t. What’s on that glass came out of your tap, and what’s on your baseboards blew in off the mesa. Albuquerque hands every home the same two jobs, over and over, and most cleaning products are sold to fight neither one.
Here’s what’s actually happening, and what removes it.
What’s Actually in Albuquerque Water
Water hardness is a measure of dissolved minerals — mostly calcium and magnesium, according to the USGS Water Science School. The USGS scale is straightforward: under 60 mg/L is soft, 61 to 120 is moderately hard, 121 to 180 is hard, and anything over 180 is very hard.
Albuquerque doesn’t get one number, and that surprises people. The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority explains that hardness here ranges from moderately hard to hard depending on where you live, because the system blends treated surface water with groundwater drawn from wells on both sides of the Rio Grande. Two houses ten minutes apart can be working with meaningfully different water.
What that means in practice is simple. Every drop that dries on a surface leaves its minerals behind. The water goes; the calcium stays. Do that a few thousand times on a shower door and you are no longer cleaning glass — you are removing a thin, bonded mineral crust that has been building since the last time anyone took it all the way off.
It’s also why your soap stopped working. The USGS notes that soap reacts with the calcium in hard water to form soap scum, which means you need more product to get the same result. So the intuitive move — more spray, more soap — makes a second film on top of the first one.
Spots, Film and Etching Are Three Different Problems
This is the part that saves people money, so it’s worth slowing down on. What looks like one cloudy door is usually three separate things, and only two of them come off.
Spots are fresh. Individual drops dried in place, minerals still sitting loose on the surface. These wipe away with almost anything, which is why a quick pass makes the glass look fixed for a day.
Film is accumulated. Layers of mineral and soap scum bonded together over months. Film does not surrender to a spray-and-wipe. It needs dwell time — the right product left on the surface long enough to break the bond — and then mechanical work with a pad matched to the surface. This is the layer most homeowners never get through, because the bottle says “spray and wipe” and they believe it.
Etching is damage. When minerals sit long enough, and especially when someone attacks them with an abrasive powder or a harsh pad, the glass surface itself gets pitted. Etched glass looks cloudy when it’s bone dry and stays cloudy no matter what you do to it. No cleaner fixes it. We would rather tell you that on day one than sell you four visits chasing it.
If you want to know which one you have, dry the glass completely and look at it in daylight. Haze that disappears when wet and returns when dry is usually still removable film. Haze that’s visible dry and doesn’t change when wet is usually etching.
Why the Squeegee Beats the Spray Bottle
Once glass is actually clean, the whole game is not letting minerals dry on it again.
That’s why our crews carry squeegees and use them on shower glass, tile walls and windows. A squeegee removes the water before it can evaporate and leave its minerals behind. A cloth pushes most of the water around and leaves a film to dry. It is a small difference on one pass and an enormous one over a year.
We also don’t use sponges. A sponge holds dirty water and redeposits it; a damp microfiber cloth lifts and holds. And we run what we call One Room, One Rag — a fresh cloth per room, and a used cloth never crosses the doorway. Hard water is stubborn enough without carrying yesterday’s minerals from the bathroom into the kitchen.
For grout lines, faucet bases, drain stops and window tracks — all the places mineral buildup hides — we use commercial steam. Heat and water, no chemicals, and it gets into seams a cloth can’t reach.
If your glass is past the point where routine cleaning helps, that’s a deep cleaning job, not a maintenance one. It takes real dwell time and real labor hours, and it’s worth doing once properly so that regular visits can hold the line afterward.
The Dust Half of the Problem
Hard water is only half of what Albuquerque does to a house. The other half arrives through your windows.
The EPA’s guidance on sources of indoor particulate matter makes the point plainly: a large share of household dust is outdoor soil and dust that has been blown or tracked indoors. At 5,300 feet, on the edge of a high desert, with juniper, elm, mulberry and cottonwood pollen in the spring and monsoon mud from July into September, we have more of that arriving than most cities do.
Two things follow from this, and both change how a house should be cleaned here.
The first is that dry dusting mostly relocates the problem. A dry cloth lifts fine particles into the air and they settle again an hour later, usually on the surface you just finished. EPA recommends dusting with damp cloths, and that matches what we see: damp cloth, worked in one direction, particles captured instead of launched. Our crews hand-dust items one at a time with a soft cloth — never with bare hands — and use extension dusters for high work.
The second is that soft surfaces are storage. Carpet, upholstery and drapes hold what settles on them and release it back into the room when someone sits down or walks past. Vacuuming regularly matters, and periodically the soft surfaces themselves need to be cleaned rather than just vacuumed.
EPA also suggests upgrading HVAC filters to MERV 13 or better and running a HEPA air cleaner. That’s outside what a cleaning crew does, but it’s the cheapest thing on this whole page and it reduces how fast everything re-dusts between visits.
What We Won’t Use on Your Surfaces, and Why
Some of the internet’s favorite hard water remedies will cost you a countertop.
Vinegar, lemon and lime are acids. They will take mineral deposits off glass, and they will also permanently dull marble, travertine and other natural stone. On stone counters our rule is pH-neutral cleaners or mild dish soap — never vinegar, lemon, lime, bleach, ammonia, abrasive pads or scouring powders. The same restraint applies to sealed Saltillo, brick and stone floors, which are common here and which acid cleaners strip.
We also don’t reach for the harshest pad available. Our crews carry a graded set — light-duty for delicate surfaces, medium-duty for showers and tile, heavy-duty only where the surface can take it — and the standing rule when someone isn’t sure is to use the gentle one or stop and ask. You cannot un-scratch a glass cooktop or a shower door.
And less chemical is more. There is no reason to empty half a can of scouring powder into a tub. Dwell time and the right tool do more than volume does, and they don’t leave a residue for the next layer of minerals to grab onto.
