The Deep Cleaning and Organizing Checklist: Your Path to a Pristine Home

A deep clean works best with a plan — otherwise you spend the first hour wandering between rooms and the last hour exhausted with half the house done. This is the room-by-room checklist for a lived-in home (if you’re moving out of a rental, use our move-out checklist instead — landlord inspections have their own priorities).

Before You Clean: Declutter Each Room

Deep cleaning around clutter doubles your time. Do a fast pass first: everything gets put away, donated, or tossed. Clear counters, clear floors, clear surfaces — then the actual cleaning goes twice as fast.

Kitchen

Inside the oven and under the stovetop burners. Inside the refrigerator, shelf by shelf, plus the top of the fridge. Microwave inside and out. Cabinet fronts (degreaser near the stove) and inside the most-used drawers. Backsplash and counters, small appliances wiped, sink scrubbed and drain deodorized, trash can itself washed, floors mopped last — including under anything you can slide out.

Bathrooms

Shower and tub scrubbed, including the hard-water scale Albuquerque’s water leaves on glass doors (a vinegar soak helps). Grout lines, toilet inside and out including the base and behind, vanity emptied and wiped inside, mirror polished, exhaust fan cover dusted, baseboards wiped, floor mopped including behind the toilet.

Bedrooms

Bedding fully washed — including mattress protectors and pillow covers. Mattress vacuumed and rotated. Under the bed vacuumed (dust central). Closet floor cleared and vacuumed, dresser tops and drawers tidied, ceiling fan blades wiped, window sills and tracks cleaned, baseboards dusted.

Living Areas

Under and behind furniture cushions (vacuum both sides). Under the couch. Electronics and shelves dusted, decor lifted — not dusted around. Ceiling fans, light fixtures, vents, and the tops of door frames: in our high-desert dust, these are always worse than you expect. Windows, sills, and tracks. Floors last, top to bottom order throughout.

The Forgotten Five

Light switches and door handles, remote controls, the inside of the washing machine (run a cleaning cycle), dryer lint area beyond the trap, and baseboards behind furniture. These five separate a surface clean from a deep clean.

Keep It: The Maintenance Rhythm
